This Saturday, CAHRS and Westfield Carousel are hosting World Knit in Public Day — a free, relaxed morning of knitting, learning, and community. Come along for beginner lessons, meet some lovely people, and help us knit a charity rug one square at a time!
What is World Public Knitting Day?
Knitting enthusiast Danielle Landes began World Wide Knit in Public Day (WWKIPDAY) in 2005, with the goal of getting all the closeted knitters out into the fresh air. During the first event, there were 25 events held around the world. By 2009, there were over 750 worldwide events, and today it is the largest knitter-run event in the world. Independent knitting gatherings now take place in more than 57 countries, with participants from Australia, Germany, the USA and beyond joining in.
World Public Knitting Day matters because it gives a solitary craft a public and social setting. Knitting often happens at home, on a commute, or in small circles, but public gatherings make the skill easier for others to notice and ask about. A beginner can see real projects in progress, watch how experienced knitters handle yarn and needles, and learn that mistakes are a normal part of making things by hand.
A brief history of knitting
Knitting is one of the oldest ways of making clothes, with the earliest known accounts dating back to at least fifth-century Egypt, where cotton fibres were knitted, often with blessings or symbols woven in to protect the wearer. Knitting later became widespread across Europe, and in the 19th century, governments and relief organisations urged civilians to knit socks, scarves, and garments for troops, turning knitting into a visible public act of wartime service.
