Paper mache is a really simple craft that you can use to make basically anything. It works by layering paste moistened paper onto a blank surface. The paper then dries into that shape.
Using the right paper is important. You want to use one that is soft a easy to mold, like newspaper. You can normal print paper, it just important to make sure it is fully saturated in the adhesive. Using glossy paper like a magazine wont work as the adhesive won’t be able to soak into the paper.
Making the adhesive:
There are two main options for making your adhesive.
There is flour paste using 1 part flour 1 part water, or a flue paste using 2 parts school PVA glue and 1 part water.
Both work well, but over time the glue mixture holds a bit better.
To start, you will need:
- Paper of your choice
- Adhesive mixture
- Base form (balloon, chicken wire, or you can make one out of cardboard)
- Brushes
- Scissors
- Sandpaper
- Paint (optional)
Getting started:
- Prepare your adhesive mixture, either flour or glue
- Tear paper into strips around 2.5 cm wide
- Choose your base form, if using a ballon blow up to desired size. If you are using chicken wire, shape into desired shape.
- Dip a strip of paper into the adhesive and the let excess glue drip off
- Place the wet strip of paper over your base and smooth down with your fingers or a brush. Repeat this process, overlapping the strips slightly until the entire base is covered with the first layer of paper. Let his layer dry completely before continuing
- Add 2-3 layer of paper mache, depending on how sturdy you want your project, allowing each layer to fully dry before the next
- Once all layers are done and dry, use a fine sandpaper to smooth any rough edges on the surface
- Once you are finished, you can paint or decorate your project however you like
